<p>PURPOSE:To prepare ethanol, under relatively mild condition, selectively, by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide and hydrogen under specific condition in a solvent containing water, in the presence of a catalyst containing cobalt, iron, ruthenium and iodine as active components. CONSTITUTION:Ethanol is prepared economically, in an industrial scale, by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in a solvent prferably an aromatic hydrocarbon, a cyclic ether, methyl acetate, etc. in the presence of water at 100-250 deg.C, especially at 130-200 deg.C, using a catalyst containing cobalt, iron, ruthenium and iodine as active components, wherein the amount of the cobalt is 0.1-500mg-atom, especially 1-50mg-atom per 1mol of methanol, the atomic ratio of iron and ruthenium to cobalt is 0.01-4, especially 0.1-2 each, and that of iodine to cobalt is 0.05-20, especially 0.1-10.</p> |
