The invention relates to main wings and baffle/dividing wings which are fitted on the side of the mixing housing at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the system, the number of the dividing wings and their arrangement angle being in principle freely selectable, the total of the widths of the main wings and baffle wings being less than 1 D; in the region of the centre axis of the mixing element, there is therefore an eccentric free cross-section which narrows from the inlet side towards the middle of the mixing element and widens again towards the outlet side and changes into its mirror image; for media with fibrous components, the dividing wings on the inflow side are rounded. In the devices, the mixing elements are preferably inverted with a twist relative to one another and introduced into apparatus and columns in an ordered or disordered state. The devices and mixing elements can be used in all relevant industries for mixing processes, reaction processes and thermal processes in piping systems and items of equipment.
