PURPOSE:To enable to shift the gear position to a reverse drive position with no need of any special operation and to prevent unintentional shifting of gears from a forward drive position to the reverse drive position at the same select position, by employing such an arrangement that movement of dogs is prevented through lapping of the dogs when the gear position is shifted directly from a forward drive position to a reverse drive position. CONSTITUTION:When gears are shifted to the fifth-speed forward drive position, forward movement of a dog 13 is prevented by a pin 17, so that the dog 13 comes out of engagement with a dog 12 and returns to its normal position through reverse turning. Therefore, the dogs are held in place in the manner that their tooth tips are opposed to each other. If the gears are shifted directly to a reverse drive position without changing a select position, reverse movement of the dog 13 is prevented by a stopper hole 15 and the pin 17. However, when the gears are shifted in the normal manner by cancelling the fifth-speed forward drive position, the top 1a of a shift lever is disengaged from a retainer groove 8 and a yoke 9 is returned to its normal position by the force of a spring 10. Then, the dog 13 is moved forward and comes into engagement with the dog 12 by a spring 18 and the gears restore the original position.
