For the operation of an automatic service machine, for example a coin-operated telephone, used coins are to be checked in the coin channel of the machine not only in respect of other criteria, but also in respect of the presence of a central perforation. For this purpose, according to the invention, there is a light barrier (3), the functional axis (a) of which passes through the coin channel (1) perpendicularly to the coin plane.
