The casting powder comprises a major fraction based on a multi-component system, pref. a ternary SiO2-CaO-Al2O3 system, and a minor fraction of a carbon-contg. material. The latter contains hydrocarbons which are volatile at the casting temp. and heavy hydrocarbons which undergo cracking to form products including lustrous carbon. - The casting powder is esp. useful in the ingot casting or continuous casting of steel. The lustrous carbon coats the powder particles uniformly so that the slagging speed of the powder can be regulated in a reproducible manner by controlling the amt. of heavy hydrocarbon and thus the thickness of the lustrous carbon coating.(0/0)
