Device and tarpaulin for covering at least one upper part of a motor vehicle having a boot opening. This device is intended to be installed in any car without additional modification. The unrolling and rolling up is to be easy and it is to be possible to store the tarpaulin in the car without difficulty. For this purpose, the device consists of a container which holds the tarpaulin, is connected thereto via attachment means and corresponds to the boot opening in width and of a mechanism for rolling up and unrolling which is connected to the container via the tarpaulin. For the purpose of unrolling, a pulling-off connection controls the successive release of the tarpaulin in the longitudinal direction via the attachment means to the container. For the purpose of rolling up, attachment means control the successive rolling up of the tarpaulin via the automatic rolling up mechanism.
