The invention relates to the field of noncatalytic gas phase processes and, more precisely, to a process for the preparation of vinyl chloride. According to this process the hydrochlorination of acetylene with hydrogen chloride is carried out at an elevated temperature and atmospheric pressure, the hydrochlorination being performed in the presence of chlorine taken in the proportion of 0.3 to 3 % by vol. relative to the reaction mixture, at a temperature of 150-350 DEG C, with a molar ratio of acetylene to hydrogen chloride of 1:2-10 respectively and with a contact time of 1-12 seconds. This process can find an application in organic synthesis of chlorine compounds.
