Process for the removal of organic and metallic residues, especially of heavy metals, from a charge intended for a melting furnace. According to this process the charge is stirred while being preheated so that the metals which it contains are converted into oxides. The invention also relates to a preheating furnace for using this process, which comprises a rotating shell 24 whose axis is inclined to the horizontal, the inner wall of which carries blades or fins 32 and in the lower part of which a lengthwise tube 31 is arranged, connected to a source of hot gases and provided with orifices 44 pointing downwards, a funnel 45 for introducing the charge opening into the shell at the top end of the latter and a conduit 15 for discharging gas also opening into the shell on the same side as the funnel 45, the shell comprising a discharge opening 37 at its bottom end. <IMAGE>
