The machine cuts the leaves and the heads off sugar beet for example and is designed for use during harvesting. A housing is used to mount a rotor (12) with flails, a revolving feeler (18) with scalping knives (20), two parallel endless screw conveyors (14,22) and one or more road wheels (36). The leaves are removed by the flails and the heads by the knives. The leaves and heads are then collected and removed by the first and second conveyors respectively. - Each scalping assembly may be mounted, whereby it can pivot about the axis (24) of the second conveyor, its feeler being driven by an hydraulic motor, fed by a proportional pump (32) coupled to a road wheel axle (34). The conveyors may feed a common evacuation chamber (43) with ejection vanes, in turn feeding a loading tube (44).
