The roller skate comprises a foot support (101) and a front (103) and a rear (102) wheel pair carried in a frame (112). At least at one end of the support, this frame is movable to and fro by a limited amount in vertical direction relative to the support. - At least one of the wheels (102) at that end is provided with a transmission (114,120-124). This converts the relative movement towards one another of the frame and that end of the support into a forward driving (138) torque whilst, at least in their nearest relative position, it permits forward wheel rotation.
