PURPOSE:A catalyst composed of oxides of iron and vanadium and a metatitanate or titanium oxide, which is obtained by treatment at special conditions, is used to effect the gas-phase catalytic reaction between a phenol and methanol at a relatively low temperature to produce the titled compound, especially o-cresol. CONSTITUTION:In the production of o-methylated phenol from a phenol and methanol, a catalyst which is composed of oxides of vanadium and iron, metatitanate or titanium oxide obtained by hydrolyzing titanium sulfate, preferably titanyl sulfate, and heating the hydrolyzate at a temperature lower than 800 deg.C, and preferably additionally a metatitanate or titanium oxide obtained by another method, is used to effect vapor catalytic reaction at 200-450 deg.C to 400 deg.C. EFFECT:The selectivity of o-cresol is improved. |
