PURPOSE:To improve picture quality by calculating the product of a character signal and its delayed signal, and making the light emission time of a scanning beam a little shorter than a basic clock period, and preventing a line recorded in a sub-scanning direction from becoming thick. CONSTITUTION:The time adjusting circuit 20a consisting of a delay circuit 20a which delays the character signal outputted from the latch circuit 3 of a character processing circuit by a time tau and an AND gate 20b which ANDs said character signal with its delay character signal from the delay circuit 20a is provided behind the latch circuit 3. Then, the delay time tau is set shorter than the period of a dot clock and the duration of the character signal is made shorter by the time tau than the time of output from the latch circuit 3.
