PURPOSE:To obtain advantageously the corresponding alcohol in a higher catalyst activity than in the well-known method, by hydrating an olefin in the presence of a sulfone and hydrogen type mordenite or hydrogen type zeolite Y having a specific molar ratio between silica and alumina. CONSTITUTION:An olefin is hydrated in the presence of (a) hydrogen type mordenite or hydrogen type zeolite Y having 20-500, preferably 30-400 molar ratio between silica and alumina and (b) an acyclic or cyclic sulfone such as dimethyl sulfone or sulfolane to give the corresponding alcohol in a higher yield than in the well-known method using an inorganic solid acid as a catalyst. Furthermore, the above-mentioned method has the following effect: There is no upper limit to the hydration temperature, and the catalyst activity can be regenerated by calcination. There is almost no by-product formed by side reactions, etc. The above-mentioned catalyst can be produced by removing an alkali from mordenite or zeolite Y, extracting the mordenite or zeolite Y with an acid or/and treating the mordenite or zeolite Y with steam, and contains <=0.1wt% expressed in terms of metal oxide, alkali (earth) metal. |
