A compsn. for use in a striking surface for safety matches, comprising particles of a blend of amorphous phosphorus and a resin binder. - The resin binder is pref. a thermoplastic resin, esp. a phenol formaldehyde resin; a thermosetting resin, esp. a urea-formaldehyde resin; or a polyacrylic acid crosslinked by reaction with zinc oxide. The compsn. pref. contains 30-80 wt.% amorphous phosphorus, 20-70 wt.% binder, 0-30 wt.% filler and 0-30 wt.% pigment or colourant. The pref. particle size is 50-500 microns. |
