PURPOSE:To attain a superior display grade without causing irregularity in color due to slight ununiformity in the thickness of a cell by adding a very small amount of coloring matter to a liq. crystal composition so as to carry out black positive display on a background having the color of the coloring matter. CONSTITUTION:A TN-FEN liq. crystal display element is formed by holding a liq. crystal composition 5 between two electrode plates 4, 4 and placing polarizing plates 1, 1 on the outsides of the plates 4, 4 so that the directions of the axes of polarization meet at right angles to each other. A very small amount of coloring matter 6 is added to the composition 5 so as to carry out black display on a background having the color of the coloring matter 6. By adding the coloring matter 6 to composition 5, extraordinary light is absorbed, and elliptically polarized light is weakened and made close to linearly polarized light. The color of the added coloring matter remains, yet coloring can be prevented. Irregularity in color is not caused by preventing coloring, and since the background is colored, the visibility can be improved. |
