The appts. for effecting mass transfer between two fluid phases comprises a permeable element which allows passage of the fluids through the pores thereof and is ratatable about an axis to subject the fluids to a mean acceleration of at least 150 m/sq.sec, a means to charge the fluids to the permeable element and a means to discharge at least one of the fluids or a deriv. from the permeable element. Improvement is that the permeable element has a voidage of at least 80 % and comprises strands, fibers, fibrils or filaments and is rotatable to subject to fluids flowing through the pores to a mean acceleration of more than about 5000 m/sq.sec.
