In the case of a device for controlling a plurality of drive units which can be switched on and off for a drive engine in a motor vehicle the stationary drive torque is used as criterion, which corresponds to a driving condition essentially free of deceleration or acceleration. When the stationary drive torque is greater than the upper limit of a comparison range, a signal is generated which can be used for switching on the drive units. A signal which can be used for switching off the drive units is correspondingly generated when the stationary drive torque is less than the lower limit of the comparison range.
