PURPOSE:To make it possible to reduce the total height of an apparatus without reducing the total throughput of the whole, by keeping a weir plate forcibly in the vertical state in passing through a conduit of flowing water, and moving the weir plate in the laid down state unless the weir plate is passed through the conduit of flowing water. CONSTITUTION:Cold water is circulated through a slender conduit 1 of flowing water, and a chicken is slowly moved with a weir plate 2 in the direction opposite to the flow direction of the cold water and cooled. In this apparatus, the weir plate 2 is connected rotatably to a chain 9, and the weir plate 2 moving in the conduit 1 is moved in the vertical or almost vertical state by a moving piece 12 and a guide rail 11. The weir plate 2 returning from the delivery side of the conduit 1 of flowing water to the supply side thereof without passing through the conduit 1 of the flowing water is released from the posture control by the moving piece 12 and the guide rail 11 and laid down by the own weight thereof in the horizontal state and moved. As a result, the total height can be remarkably reduced without reducing the total throughput, and the apparatus can be installed in a building with a low ceiling.
