PURPOSE:To provide an aldose reductase inhibitor containing a specific oxazole derivative as an essential component, having low toxicity and excellent aldose reductase inhibiting action, and effective for the prevention and remedy of the complication of diabetes. CONSTITUTION:The objective agent contains, as an essential component, the oxazole derivative of formula (R1 is phenyl which may have F, Cl or NO2 at the p-position; R2 is ethoxycarbonyl or benzyloxy-amido), e.g. ethyl 5-phenyl-2- oxazolecarbamate, benzyl 5-p-fluorophenyl-2-oxazolecarbamate, etc. The agent is effective for the prevention and remedy of the cataract of diabetes mellitus, neurosis of diabetes mellitus, retinopathy of diabetes mellitus, etc. which are known as the complication of diabetes and caused by the increase in the activity of aldose reductase. Dose; 0.1-2mg/kg-weight daily.
