PURPOSE:To obtain an amorphous magneto-optical layer having a large angle of Kerr rotation and large coercive force by incorporating a specified amount of Cu into a Td-Dy-Fe film having its axis of easy magnetization in a direction perpendicular to the surface. CONSTITUTION:This invention relates to an amorphous magneto-optical layer for a photomagnetic recording medium. When a Tb-Dy-Fe film having its axis of easy magnetization in a direction perpendicular to the surface is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate of glass, plastics or the like by sputtering or other method, at least 0.5atomic%, preferably 0.5-5atomic% Cu is incorporated into the Tb-Dy-Fe film.
