NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by the formula I (R is 1-10C straight-chain alkyl). USE:A nematic liquid crystal material useful as an electrooptical display material. Especially useful as a nematic liquid crystal of thioester derivative. Showing a wide nematic temperature range, capable of carrying out low-voltage drive when it is applied to a field-effect cell. PREPARATION:An acyl halide shown by the formula II (X is Cl, Br, or I) is reacted with a compound shown by the formula III in an inert organic solvent such as diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, etc. in the presence of a tertiary amine such as preferably triethylamine, pyridine, etc. at room temperature - the reflux temperature of the reaction mixture, to give a compound shown by the formula I .
