A sleeve member 13 and a pin member 10, are used in a method of joining the ends of two coaxial cables, the resilient fingers at each end of the pin fitting in bores 7 in each of the inner conductor cores, while the sleeve member fits between the dielectric insulating material 6 of the cables and the outer conductors 5, each of the latter having a flared portion to accommodate the sleeve. Before assembly loading sleeves 8 are mounted on each cable, then the plug 10 is inserted in one of the bores 7 and the cables brought together to engage opposite ends of the sleeve 13. Further axial movement of the two cables towards one another locates the free end of the plug 10 within the remaining bore 7, and brings the cable ends together into abutting relationship. Finally the loading sleeves 8 are drawn over the flared portions of the cable ends, whereby pressure is exerted between the flared portions and the sleeve 13 thus providing good electrical contact. A rib 12 is provided in the plug 10 to ensure that equal lengths of the plug are located in each cable core, and a sealing ring 14 mounted on the sleeve 13 to provide a fluidtight seal. In a modification (Fig. 6A, not shown), the ends of the loading sleeves overlap while in a further modification (Fig. 8, not shown) for braided core conductors the plug 10 is replaced by a sleeve (10<SP>1</SP>) similar to 13, which fits between the core (4) and the insulation (6). In a still further modification (Fig. 9, not shown) for coaxial cables having an outer insulation, the cables are provided with clamping rings (20) with a rubber sealing ring 23 between them, the rings (20) being formed in one piece or of several arcuate parts.</p> |
