PURPOSE:To enhance the efficiency of electric discharge machining, by counting the frequency of electric discharge between a machining gap at every second set time, and as well by comparing the thus obtained count number with a second reference value to monitor the condition of machining. CONSTITUTION:A CPU28 having a counting function computes the frequency Ns of electric discharge which occures during every sampling time Ts as a second set time, and compares the frequency Ns of electric discharge with a reference electric discharge frequency Nx which is beforehand set as a second reference value, to determine an interpole short-circuit if Ns=Nx. In this case a wire- electrode is separated from a part to be machined, and then a machining process is restarted.
