PURPOSE:To provide an electrochromic (EC) display element which has a wide allowable voltage range required for color formation and has a high degree of freedom in the choice of solvents, by using a specified azo compd. as an EC substance. CONSTITUTION:A compd. of formula I [wherein R1 is H, (substd.) alkyl, (substd.) aryl; R2 is (substd.)aryl, (substd.)heterocyclic group; X is H, halogen, (substd.) alkyl, (substd.)alkoxy, nitrile] such as a compd. of formula II is used as an EC substance. An EC soln. 6 comprising said EC substance, a support electrode and a solvent is enclosed in the space between a display electrode 1 (numeral 2 is a transparent substrate) and an opposing electrode 3 (4: support, 5: spacer), and the whole is sealed with a sealing agent 7 to form an EC display element.
