A chlorine dioxide stream from chlorate reduction is absorbed in water and the resulting solution is treated with chlorite to remove residual chlorine. Pref. the process comprises (a) the chlorate is reacted with chloride ions and mineral acid in a chlorine dioxide generator at an acid normality of 2 to 12N approx.. (b) The mixt. is kept at approx., 50-100 deg. C; (c) It is subjected to reduced pressure; (d) alkali metal salt is precipitated and removed; (e) a mixture of chlorine dioxide, chlorine and steam is removed. An aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide (including residual chlorine) and a stream of chlorine is formed by contact with cold water; and (f) the resulting solution is treated with chlorite. |
