A stabilized composition comprises a mixture of tetra-alkyl lead compound in which from 20 to 80% of the alkyl radicals are methyl, and the balance is ethyl, a hydrocarbon having a boiling point in the range 90-150 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and being an alkane or a mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbon containing only aromatic unsaturation present in amount 5 to 30 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight said mixture, and ethylene dibromide and/or propylene dibromide in amount about 1 mole per mole of tetra-alkyl lead compounds. The preferred hydrocarbon is toluene, and additionally there may be present a fused ring aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. 0.1 to 3 parts by weight thereof per 100 parts alkyl lead compounds. The alkyl lead mixture may be obtained by reacting a sodium-lead alloy with ethyl chloride and a methyl halide in the presence of a catalyst and steam distilling in the presence of the above stabilizer, or by a redistribution process carried out in the presence of a catalyst and the stabilizer, or by mixing appropriate amounts of at least two of the five possible tetra-alkyl lead compounds. |
