PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having superior electromagnetic transducing characteristics, lubricity and durability by forming the protective layer of a specified chlorofluoroethylene polymer on a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:When a thin film type magnetic recording medium is obtd. by forming a magnetic layer on a nonmagnetic support, the protective layer of a chlorofluoroethylene polymer represented by formula I (where n is 1 or 2, and m is a positive number) is formed on the magnetic layer. Since the protective layer has the adsorption effect of the chlorofluoroethylene polymer on a metallic surface and the lubricating action of the polymer, the layer is very effective in improving the wear resistance and the traveling performance of the thin film type magnetic recording medium. In case of n=3 or 4, the number of Cl atoms is increased, and the number of F atoms is relatively reduced, so the polymer layer has the reduced surface lubricity, is liable to take sliding scratches during contact with a magnetic head, and does not provide satisfactory durability. In case of n=0, that is, in case of a tetrafluoroethylene polymer, the layer of the polymer is easily stripped by contact with a magnetic head and does not act as a protective layer because the polymer has inferior adhesion to a magnetic layer. |
