PURPOSE:To read a high-definition image by picking up an original picture image several times by a TV camera or image scanner while jogging the original picture image or an optical mask, and inputting the original picture image as decomposed picture elements. CONSTITUTION:When an image pickup operation is performed for the 1st time, the optical mask 101 is positioned by a jogging mechanism 102 under the command of a control circuit 108 so that the aperture groups of the optical mask 101 face a sampling position 1. Then, the jogging mechanism 102 jogs the optical mask 101 by sample pitch DELTAX horizontally under the command of the control circuit 109 to position the aperture group at a sampling position indicated by No.2 and the 2nd image pickup operation is performed. Similarly, the 3rd operation and the 4th operation are carried out at sample positions indicated by No.3 and NO.4 to store data of four frames in total in the image memory 107. Thus, the high-definition image having picture elements four times as many as picture elements picked up at a time is inputted.
