PURPOSE:To carry out the selective and exclusive hydrogenation and removal of phenylacetylene existing in a styrene compound as an impurity, and to obtain purified styrene compound, by using a highly active hydrogenation catalyst containing univalent and/or 0-valent copper. CONSTITUTION:The phenylacetylene compound such as phenylacetylene, alkylphenylacetylene, etc., existing in a styrene-containing composition such as styrene, crude styrene, methylstyrene, etc., is removed by the selective hydrogenation to obtain purified styrene-containing composition. The hydrogenation is carried out by using a catalyst produced by supporting at least one kind of copper, inorganic acid salt, organic acid salt, or oxide of copper, on a carrier such as alumina, silica, activated carbon, etc., and reducing the copper compound to univalent and/or 0-valent copper with a proper reducing agent. EFFECT:The process is economical because of the low styrene loss and the use of inexpensive, long-life and highly active catalyst.
