PURPOSE:To improve the correcting capacity of a burst error by inserting the 3rd code series having higher error correcting capacity than the 1st and 2nd code series to a part of the direction crossing the transmitting direction of the data of a 2-dimensional array. CONSTITUTION:The data underwent the error correction coding process is extracted to a record data output terminal 8 by a C1/C2 encoder 5 and a CO encoder 6 via a record amplifier 7. The record data is supplied to a rotary head from the terminal 8 and recorded on a magnetic tape. The data reproduced from the tape is supplied to a reproduced data input terminal 11 and then written to a RAM 2 via a reproduction amplifier 12 and a data bus 1. Furthermore a CO decoder 13 and C1/C2 decoder 14 are connected to the bus 1, and the reproduced data stored in the RAM 2 undergo the error correction processing through these decoders 13 and 14. Then the corrected digital data is turned again into analog video signals by a D/A converter 15 and extracted through an output terminal 16.
