The invention comprises cationic dyes having the general formula <FORM:1055984/C4-C5/1> in which F is a phthalocyanine or metal phthalocyanine or azo dye free from ionic water solubilizing groups, R is an alkylene, arylene or arylene-alkyl radical, the alkylene or arylene alkyl radical may be substituted by sulphur, oxygen and/or nitrogen atoms, R1 and R2 are alkyl or aralkyl groups, 2 is an anion and n has the values 1-4. The above dyes are prepared by alkylating or aralkylating in aqueous alkali, preferably sodium hydroxide, dyes having the formula F-(-SO2-NH-R-SH)n in which F, R and n are as above, at temperatures of 40-80 DEG C. to yield a thioether of formula F-(-SO2-NR1-R-S-R1)n in which F, R, R1 and n are as above, the compound is dried and reacted again with an alkylating or aralkylating agent with or without an organic solvent at 80-120 DEG C., yielding the desired dyes. Alkylating and aralkylating agents include methyl iodide, benzyl chloride, dimethyl and diethyl sulphate and orthotoluene sulphonic acid methyl ester. The dyes of formula F-(-SO2-NH-R-SH)n are obtained by hydrolysis in acid medium of dyes of formula F-(-SO2-NH-R-SSO3H)n and by hydrolysis in alkali of dyes of formula <FORM:1055984/C4-C5/2> The novel dyes give blue-yellow shades on animal and vegetable fibres.
