PURPOSE:To decrease the skid marks to be formed on billets and to improve the quality of hot rolled materials by providing a recess on the extension line of skid rails to a soaking zone hearth in a billet heating furnace having the skid rails and guiding a heating gas thereto. CONSTITUTION:The skid marks of a low temp. are formed to the parts of the plural billets 1 where the billets contact with the skid rails as a result of cooling by the skid rails and if such billets are hot rolled, the deteriorated dimensional accuracy, etc. of the rolled products are generated in the case of conveying the billets 1 in the billet heating furnace consisting of a preheating zone, heating zone and soaking zone and having the skid rails on the skid rails 2 and heating the same to the hot rolling temp. A 'Corhart(R)' brick 11 is laid on a hearth foundation 10 in the soaking zone C and the 'Corhart(R)' brick 11 on the extension line of the skied rails 2 is removed by 1/4-3/4 the length of the soaking hearth in the longitudinal direction of the furnace to form the recess 12 for the above-mentioned purpose. The atmospheric gas of a high temp. is filled in the recessed part to eliminate the skid marks formed in the heating zone. The billets are thus uniformly heated.
