PURPOSE:To keep the temperature of a reaction system for the production of the titled compound by the thermal decomposition dehydrochlorination reaction of 1,2,3-trichloropropane, and to obtain the objective compound in high yield, by carrying out the above reaction in a molten salt at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:1,2-Dichloropropene useful as an agricultural chemical and raw material for organic synthesis is produced economically on an industrial scale by the dehydrochlorination reaction of 1,2,3-trichloropropane in a molten salt at 400-800 deg.C, preferable 550-770 deg.C. Since the temperature of the reaction system is maintained at a constant level by the above molten salt, the side reactions such as redecomposition of the objective product, etc., can be suppressed and the selectivity of the objective compound can be remarkably improved. The molten salt is a metal halide, oxide, sulfate, nitrate, carbonate, etc., preferably chloride, and especially preferably plural kinds of the metal compounds are used as a mixture to lower the eutectic point.
