PURPOSE:To retrieve display information of Kanji (Chinese character) by dividing a Kanji stroke table, storing them into an auxiliary memory, storing the division table designated at the initial setting into a main memory and retrieving it so as to reduce the area of the main memory. CONSTITUTION:Kanji stroke tables 15a, 15b and retrieval tables 14a, 14b are formed in advance and stored in the auxiliary memory 11. In inputting division number (n) from a key input section 10, a table selection section 13 uses the said (n) and the said retrieval table is stored in a retrieval table storage table area 16 of the main memory 2. In retrieving Kanji (Chinese character) display information, the said Kanji code is obtained from a Kana (Japanese syllabary) input at a Kana-Kanji conversion section 6. Then a head code of each division table described in the resident retrieval table in the main memory 2 is compared, the division table stored in the said Kanji code is obtained and stored in the main memory 2 from the auxiliary memory 11 to detect the said Kanji stroke information. The detected Kanji stroke information is sent to the display section 8 and displayed.
