PURPOSE:To provide excellent dispersibility and high packing density and orientation property to magnetic powder and to improve the surface smoothness and further the magnetic characteristics of the titled medium such as residual magnetic flux density and squareness ratio by incorporating a water-soluble high molecular surfactant and specified phosphoric ester into the magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:A water-soluble high molecular surfactant and phosphoric ester are incorporated into the magnetic layer of a magnetic recording medium provided on a substrate. Magnetic powder is immersed in the aq. soln. of the surfactant and the ester and then dried. The obtained magnetic powder is dispersed in an aq. org. solvent contg. phosphoric ester shown by the formula and a binder component to prepare a magnetic paint which is coated on the substrate and dried to form the magnetic layer. The water-soluble high molecular surfactant has 1,000-10,000mol.wt. and, for example, polyvinyl alcohol, etc., is used. The phosphoric ester has an (metha)acryloyl group R1 combined with the alkylene oxide structural part and a monoester wherein both R2 and R3 in the formula are hydrogen or the diester is used.
