PURPOSE:To obtain clear contrast removed of crosstalk by applying a signal generated in accordance with gradation to picture elements in which optical modulating elements oriented at the 1st and 2nd stabilized states are mixed. CONSTITUTION:When a voltage -2V exceeding a threshold voltage -Vth2 is applied to all picture elements on a selected scanning line at a phase t1, all the picture elements are once kept at the optically stabilized state. A voltage 2V exceeding a threshold voltage Vth1 is applied to picture elements A corresponding to the existence of information signals out of all the picture elements at a phase t2 and the elements A are transferred to the other optically stabilized state. Since the voltage to be applied to picture elements B corresponding to the absence of an information signal on the same scanning line at the phase t2 does not exceed the voltage Vth1, the picture elements B is continuously kept at one optically stabilized state. On the other hand, the voltage applied to picture elements C, D is +V or 0 and does not exceed the threshold, so that the picture elements C, D hold orientation corresponding to the preceding signal state. Even if the number of scanning lines is increased, its duty ratio is not practically changed and the reduction of contrast, crosstalk, etc. are not completely removed. |
