PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber having an excellent tensile strength and a suitable elongation by forming a coating layer composed of a copolymer contg. a high polymer carbon and an org. high polymer on a bare wire of the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The coating layer 2 is formed on the bare wire 1 of the optical fiber made of a quartz glass. The coating layer 2 is formed from the copolymer of the high polymer carbon and the org. high polymer. The polymer is constituted from a carbon matrix which has a composition extremely insufficient to a hydrogen atom in comparison with a conventional org. high polymer, and is highly developed a cross-linkage structure. As the prescribed polymer has a structure which is randomly bonded the high polymer carbon part composed of a crystalline carbon 3..., and an amorphous carbon 4... etc. with a hydrocarbon part 5.... The coating layer has a flexibility and a suitable elongation, and has a less hydrogen content and hinders a permeation of a hydrogen atom etc. thereby reducing a microbending loss and an increasement of the transmission loss due to the hydrogen atom, and also improving the tensile strength, without peeling off the coating layer, even if the tensile strength is loaded to the coated layer.
