PURPOSE:To pick up an image of a groove nearby a weld zone without using an external light source nor cutting off light emitted by a welding arc by providing a reflection mirror nearby a TV camera. CONSTITUTION:The light emitted by the arc 6 is intense, so the light is reflected by a reflection mirror 11 to the groove 3 nearby the weld zone and the boundary part 12 between a light part D which is lighted with the reflected light and a dark part E which is not irradiated with the reflected light and has no change in brightness is formed at the groove 3. Namely, the sectional shape of the groove 3 nearby the weld zone is featured by the boundary part E. Therefore, the image of the groove 3 where the boundary part 12 between the light part D and dark part E is picked up by a TV camera 4 to obtain the sectional shape of the groove 3. Consequently, the image of the groove nearby the weld zone is picked up without guiding the light featuring the sectional shape of the groove from an external light source nor cutting off the light from the welding arc.
