<p>New monomers have formula (I), where the ester-ether chain is in the 5 and/or 6 position; R is the unsatd. residue(s) of methacrylic acid, crotonic acid, or an unsatd. polycarboxylic acid (esp. methacrylic, itaconic, fumaric, maleic and/or alpha-methylene glutaric acid); n is from 1 to the number of COOH gps. in the acid; R1 is 2-12C (2-6C) alkylene or 2-12C (4-12C) oxyalkylene contg. is not 1 oxygen atom linking is not 2C alkylene segments (esp. ethylene, methyl-ethylene, 1-methyl-propylene, 2,2-dimethyl-propylene or hexylene). (I) are used in (co)polymers, in adhesives, in coatings and/or impregnants, as modifiers for alkyds, for polyurethanes and other film-formers and oxidisable drying oils, as flow control agents in vinyl addn. polymer latices, and as binders for non-woven textiles. (I) are odourless, have low volatility, low viscosity and low toxicity, are stable to hydrolysis in acid and alkali, are compatible with a wide range of polymers and/or resin-forming condensates, and give softer prods. than are given by dicyclopentenyl (meth)acrylate (II). (I) can be used to regulate the viscosity of coating compsns.; use of solvents can be avoided. Coatings contg. (I) dry rapidly and have improved properties.</p> |
