In a fully automated assembly line for automatic circuit breakers, it is necessary to perform automatic lateral hair-gap measuring at a point of the mounted opened switch which is difficult to gain access to, for example for adjustment purposes. In the measuring method according to the invention, the illumination of the object to be detected is carried out through the wall of the housing. The image of the measured point or test point to be detected is projected via an optic system onto a screen, for example frosted glass window, for evaluation purposes. The image can, however, also be projected onto a photodiode line of a camera to which an evaluation device is connected. <IMAGE>
