A vehicle load monitoring system for a tipping vehicle is disclosed which both provides the driver with useful information during loading to enable him to ensure compliance with legal limits on certain load parameters, and checks on various vehicle variables before or during tipping to inhibit the occurrence of situations in which the vehicle may become unstable, e.g. when parked on an incline. On loading, measured load weight components are corrected in accordance with a detected longitudinal (front-to-back) vehicle inclination and calculated load parameters are compared with thresholds which have been predetermined in accordance with the legal restrictions. In unloading, the position of the centre of gravity of the load is calculated and longitudinal and lateral load inclinations are detected, and the locus of the centre of gravity during tipping is predicted. If it is determined that the predicted locus will cause a condition of vehicle instability, tipping or further tipping is inhibited and an alarm given. Additionally or alternatively, prediction of unstable conditions can be carried out before tipping commences, and/or a dangerous situation due to shifting load can be detected during tipping. |
