PURPOSE:To make cleaning while preventing a toner from remaining in a line shape on the tip of a toner scraping member when the contact with the surface of a toner carrying body is released and to obtain a good image by using a cleaning device having means which can press said member to the toner carrying body and release the contact. CONSTITUTION:The toner scraping member 11 in the cleaning device 7 is pressed to the surface of the hollow toner carrying body 1 which moves cyclically in the axial direction. A toner receiving member 12 is pressed to the surface of the body 1 on the upper stream side in the moving direction of the body 1 to accept the toner removed by the member 12 into the device 7. The contact of the device 7 with the body 1 is released by a contact releasing means having a suction member 8, an energizing spring 9, etc. A slit-shaped aperture 2 communicating with the inside of the body 1 is partly provided to said body in parallel with the axis and removed toner reservoir 13 is provided in the hollow part of the body 1. The residual toner 6 is cleaned by the device 7 and the remaining of the toner in the line shape at the tip of the member 1 is prevented.
