PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a scale inhibitor, an adjustor for digging muddly water, by reacting a hydroxyalkanesulfonate with (meth)acrylic acid under a specific condition, dissolving a reaction product in a water phase and separating the water phase from an organic solvent phase. CONSTITUTION:A hydroxyalkanesulfonate shown by the formula (R<1>-R<4> are H, methyl or ethyl; X is mono- - trivalent metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium) is reacted with (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of preferably an esterification reaction catalyst (e.g., p-toluenesulfonic acid) in a water- insoluble inert organic solvent (e.g., benzene) while distilling away water formed by the esterification reaction as an azeotropic mixture of water and the organic solvent. Then, the organic solvent slurry is blended with water and, if necessary, a base and the reaction product is dissolved in a water phase and separated to give the aimed substance. EFFECT:This production method is simple, an amount of a polymerization inhibitor blended is small and the prepared substance has improved shelf stability.
