PURPOSE:To obtain the titled resin excellent in flexibility, flame retardancy and impact resistance and useful as a reactive diluent or a coating epoxy resin, by reacting a specified biphenol with an epihalohydrin in the presence of a basic compound. CONSTITUTION:A biphenol (a) of formula I (wherein R is 6C or higher aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon residue and m is 1-2) or formula II, obtained by reacting resorcinol or hydroquinone with a 6C or higher aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon in the presence of an alkylation catalyst is reacted with about 2-10mol, per hydroxyl group in component (a), of an epihalohydrin of formula III (wherein X is a halogen) at 20-120 deg.C in the presence of a basic catalyst (e.g., NaOH) to obtain the titled resin of formula IV (whereisn A is a residue derived by removing the two hydrogen atoms from the two hydroxyl groups of a biphenol of formula I or II and n>=0).
