PURPOSE:To improve the picture quality by coating an index fluorescent substance excessively to the scanning start end in the effective scanning range coated with the primary color fluorescent substance so as to detect an index signal earlier and to compensate a delay time required for the index signal processing thereby eliminating the flickered picture at the scanning start part. CONSTITUTION:The flicker of a picture at the pattern scanning start part is caused by an interblock of an actual index signal 108 is overlapped on the effective pattern range where the RBG primary color fluorescent substance is applied after a time t2. Thus, several sets of index fluorescent substance 100 is applied to the pre-scanning part in the effective pattern range so as to generate an optical index signal earlier by a time equal to at least a delay time tau. In using an index tube of, e.g., 129-triplet, when the index fluorescent substance 107 is applied excessively by 2-triplet at the start of scanning part, the optical index signal is detected earlier by nearly 740ns, no defect of index signal 108 is caused in the effective scanning range. Thus, no flicker of a picture is caused at the scanning start part.
