PURPOSE:To obtain useful tar oils, etc., from a low-quality coal in a high yield by taking advantage of surplus space, by feeding coal having a low degree of coalification into a surplus space which is formed in a carbonization chamber of a coke over at the end of carbonization, thereby recovering gaseous substances which have been produced. CONSTITUTION:Coal having a low degree of coalification is fed in a surplus space which is formed in a carbonization chamber in carbonizing coal due to shrinkage of the charged coal with the progress of carbonization, thereby hydropyrolytically decomposing the coal. The produced gaseous substances are recovered, so that tar oils, etc., useful as chemical starting materials can be advantageously obtd. from low-quality coal simultaneously with the production of coke. It is preferred that the coal having a low degree of coalification be fed when hydrogen concn. of the coke over gas produced in the carbonization chamber into which the coal is fed reaches 65vol% or higher or within 4hr or less before the termination of coking period in the carbonization chamber.
