PURPOSE:To make it possible to shorten a braking time and a braking distance to improve safety by making the accumulating means of a power transmission system absorb and accumulate the rotating energy of a propeller resulting from a relative flow with a hull so as to brake the hull. CONSTITUTION:When a fuel supply to an engine 1 is stopped by an emergency stoppage instruction, a propeller 2 comes in an idling condition. Now, a control device 9 actuates a breaker 12 and an energy accumulating means 4 is connected to a power transmission system 3 and propeller rotating energy resulting from the relative flow between a hull and sea water is converted into electric energy through a main shaft driving generator 8 and accumulated, as an inertial energy in a flywheel 11 by means of an electric motor 10. When the propeller revolution number is considerably dropped by the braking with this load, the accumulating means 4 is cut off and simultaneously the engine 1 and the propeller 2 are forced to stop by means of air injection and/or other means. Next, the accumulating means 4 is connected to the power transmission system 3 so as to drive the engine 1 reversely to brake the hull. In this way, a braking time and a braking distance are shortened and safety is improved.
