PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which is suitable for high- density recording and has good dispersibility of magnetic particles by incorporating planar magnetic particles having the axis of easy magnetization in a prescribed direction and average grain size and specific org. dye compd. into a magnetic layer. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic particles which are planar and have the axis of easy magnetization perpendicular to the plane face and have <=0.15mum average grain size and the org. dye compd. having a carboxyl group and/or sulfonate group are incorporated into the magnetic layer. For example, hexagonal ferrite, etc. are used for the magnetic particles and the shape thereof and planar. Since the axis of easy magnetization is perpendicular to the plane face, the magnetic particles are easily oriented in the perpendicular direction. The recording medium suitable for vertical magnetic recording is thus obtd. The org. dye compd. is preferably are azo compd. in the form of salt. The org. compd. is added to the magnetic powder at 0.1-20(wt%), more preferably 0.1-10%. The magnetic coating compd. having excellent dispersion stability and workability for coating is obtd.
