PURPOSE:To improve running safety in case of abnormalities by comparing the output of an accelerator sensor with that of a throttle sensor whereby controlling a throttle opening control stepping motor in case of abnormalities in a control section based on drive pulse signals different from those for a normal condition. CONSTITUTION:The titled device controls the opening of a throttle valve by controlling the drive of a stepping motor 6 by means of a control unit 8 based on the output signal from an accelerator sensor 13 linked with an accelerator pedal. In this case, the device is provided with a fail safe circuit 21 consisting of a comparator 23 which compares the output signal from the accelerator sensor 13 with that from a throttle sensor 5, and of a pulse generator 22 which supplies separate drive pulse signals in place of drive pulse signals from a CPU 20 when the throttle valve control section of the CPU 20 is in an abnormal condition. Then a failure judging circuit 26 is actuated for switching respective contacts S1 and S2 of a switch-over circuit 24 over to the comparator (23) side from the CPU (20) side when the output from the sensor 13 does not coincide with that from the sensor 5.
