PURPOSE:To set up possibility of getting a metal halide lamp with no flicker but excellent luminous property, by optimizing the luminosity of sodium. CONSTITUTION:A metal halide lamp should be set up including a vertical light ing type quartz luminous tube which contains sodium holide, scandium halide and mercury, and also Ne, Ar, mixture on Ne and Ar serving as rare gases for starting. Such a quantitative formula as 0.17<=Ina/To<=0.21 should be satisfied where Io is defined as the energy emitted from a luminous tube at wavelengths within a range from 330nm to 850nm and INa is defined as the luminous energy from sodium, a part of Io. Owing to the above-mentioned process, flicker of the luminous tube can be eliminated by reducing the effect of luminescence of sodium which is the cause of the flicker.
